Do Justly, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly

What doth the Lord require but to do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with thy God. (Micah 6:8)

Marraige - Thoughts for a bridal shower Part 1

Recently I was given the privilege and blessing of giving a devotional talk at the bridal shower of a dear young lady who use to babysit my 7 children before she went to college. I though I would share with you what God impressed upon my heart to share with her.

Revelation 4:11 says “You are worthy O Lord to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things and by your will they exist and were created.

Thank you Lord for creating marriage . And making it a representation of the relationship of your people with you. It is through these pictures you give us in your word that we can “see” what you created marriage for and why it is a blessing to us.
Christie, as I prayed and asked God what He would have me talk about to you , He showed me this verse from Revelation 4:11. And first I was confused by the choice of the verse but as I prayed and continued to read that week it became clear to me why God had chosen this verse for me to share. I believe that God gave me this verse to share with you because as in all things and In marriage God must be the focus. One of the most important things to remember in marriage is that you are not living for each other but for God to serve him together. Love and serve him first and your love for each other will grow even more.
But how do you go about serving God and not living for each other? Thankfully we do not have to figure it all out ourselves. God tells us in Ephesians 22-33:
“Wives submit to your own husband as unto the Lord, for the Husband is the head of the wife as also Christ is the head of the church; and He is the savior of the body. Therefore just as the church is subject to Christ so let wives be subject to their own husbands in everything. Husbands Love your wives, Just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for her that he might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word that he might present her to himself a glorious church not having any spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and with out blemish. So husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh but nourishes and cherishes it. Just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body of His flesh and His bones. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother an be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh. This is a great mystery but I speak concerning Christ and the church, Never the less let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
God also tells us in 1 Corinthians 11: 1,9,12 “I want you to know that the head of every mans is Christ and the head of woman is man....Nor was man created for woman but woman for man , for this reason a woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head because of the angels, nevertheless neither is a man independent of woman nor woman independent of man in the Lord ;For as woman came from man even so man also comes through women but all things are form God.
We can see from these verses that as wives we are to love our husbands by submitting to them, honoring them and respect them. and husbands are to lead, love , nourish and cherish their wives as Christ loves the church As a married couple husbands and wives roles compliment one other . The husband is the leader protector provider, The wife is the helpmate, confidant counselor of her husband as he leads the family. The two are one flesh and a complete each other There is a perfect balance in the roles God has set before us . When we follow Gods ways difficulties are minimized.
So as a wife how do we practically carry out what God has set before us, to be a helpmate a completer. Again we can look to God’s word for help. Aren’t you thankful that God has given us His word so that we can begin to figure out how to serve him and please Him in the way he wants. I sure am. In Proverbs 31 God paints a picture for us as wives of how to serve Him In practical ways. In this picture the wife is diligent , faithful, resourceful, hardworking protecting and promoting both her husbands and her families welfare. She is confident and resourceful and many other things yet these characteristics do not come from herself but from her trust and dependence on the Lord. This is where her focus lies in honoring , trusting and serving the Lord.
I’d like to tell you a story now of how one Godly woman’s Life affected mine many years ago . At the time I was a young bride and not a Christian but I was searching . At the church I was attending there was a Godly woman named Eleanor who often sought out younger wives to encourage them. One day another young wife and I were talking with Eleanor and she said and did something that I have never forgotten. It was so simple. Eleanor was asking us about our lives and husbands . Both myself and this other young wife began to share What the “challenges” of our lives were. At some point in the conversation we started to complain about things we did not like about our husband ;at which time Eleanor gently but firmly stopped us and said “ Don’t ever say anything bad about your husband “ when we began to protest and try to explain ourselves she again gently but more firmly stopped us and said “don’t ever say anything bad about your husband” At the time I thought she just did not understand what we meant. I did not grasp the magnitude of what she was saying and why But ,I never forgot it and God impressed it on my mind. What she was getting at was that we were not honoring our husbands and respecting them. But more than that we were actually defaming their names in public. When two people are married the two are one flesh. We become one with our husbands , we as helpmates are to be wise and build our house up not tear it down and we need to start by giving our husbands the honor and respect that God tells us to. What a blessing it has been for me to try to do this over the years. Granted I have not been successful many times, but many blessings have come from trying to follow Gods ways in this.
As a wife we have many responsibilities in taking care of our husbands' and homes and families as we serve and glorify God ,But the one thing that has helped me over the years to keep in mind is this : when situations arise in the marriage relationship and difficulties set in we are to work together with our husbands and God to resolve the issue but it is not our responsibilities to change our husband. Let me say that again , It is not our responsibility/job to try to change our husband. Only God changes people. If things are resolved to a point and our husband has not “changed” to what we want ,most of the time we need to be quiet, trust God and pray for wisdom....and usually I have found out that it was ME God wanted to change. When you glorify God and honor God and serving him is the focus of your marriage It becomes easier to trust God in all circumstances He allows to happen in your marriage .
May God Bless you many times over as you begin this journey of serving Him with your lives.

The Love of Christ Can Do Amazing Things

I read these thoughts on a Christmas card this past week and wanted to post them.

The Love of Christ can do amazing things...
The Love of Christ can open your eyes ( Isaiah 42:7)
and completely change your thinking ( Romans 12:2)
about what really matters most in life.

The Love of Christ can lift you above
what is ordinary and everyday
and male you believe
that forever is not nearly long enough (Psalm 34:1-3)

The Love of Christ can open your heart
and convince you once and for all
that miracles really do happen.( Matt 19:26)

This is how we know what love is :Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.. ( 1 John 3:16)

May His love be the gift that fills your heart and your world at Christmas and all through a beautiful year!
(The Card was published by The Word).

I also read In a book I am reading( well really a devotional about praying God's word Day by day
The beautiful thing about Salvation is it's simplicity.
Christ has already done all the work on the cross!

Luke 1:46-47 says:
My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior
This is the beginning of the "song of Mary " read through the rest of the verses on your own they are beautiful( verse 46-55)

Let us magnify the Lord and bring glory to Him
Praise be to God our precious Savior for the wondrous things he has done for us. Romans 5: 6- 9 says "For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man sill one die:yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare die.God demonstrated His own Love toward us in this : in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. Much more then, having been justified by His blood , we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

Have a Happy New Year!

Brief thoughts from a recent quiet time

Romans 12:9- 21

Let Love be with out hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saint, given to hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you;and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written,"Vengence is Mine, i will repay,: says the Lord.

Therefore

"If your enemy is hungry, feed him;

If he is thirsty, give him a drink;

For in doing so you will heap coals of fire on his head"

Do not be overcome by evil , but overcome evil with good.

I read this in a quiet time recently and was very sober thinking about it ( so much to do according to the Lord it seemed overwhelming) and yet rejoicing in my heart, Because we have such an awesome God . He instructs us in the way that we should go and then provides the means for us to be able to do it . He promises that If we take His yoke and learn from it , for he is gentle and Lowly in heart, we will find rest for our souls. For His yoke is easy and His burden is light.-Matt 11:29-30 and We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.( Philippians 4:13 and God's grace is sufficient for us ,for His strength is made perfect in weakness for when we are weak then we are strong. (2 Cor 12:9-10)

Some one shared with me on time ( they grew up on a farm) what it was like for animals ( oxen) to be in a yoke. There is one oxen who knows what he is doing and another who is not trained. The yoke is put on both the animals so that the new oxen can learn. and as long as the new oxen doesn't fight the other oxen who knows what he is doing then things go well ,but if the new oxen fights the yoke or the path of the other oxen then the yoke causes him pain . My friend really liked this example in scripture that Jesus gave of a yoke because they could "see" how It is like this for us. When we follow the way the Lord has shown us in scripture and do things His way The yoke is easy and the burden is light because we are pleasing the Lord. But when we are sinning and fighting against God's ways and trying to go our own way it is painful and we find no rest . That doesn't mean we won't suffer and/ or things won't go wrong but the way will be easier because we have a Heavenly Father who loves us and is caring for us in all aspects of our lives.

May God richly bless your day so that you are full to the measure with Him.

Remembering the important things while "doing the hard things"

I found these statements in a book By Dr. Nell Collins. When I struggle the most with my flesh vs. my spirit they help me to redirect my perspective back to God's perspective. They encourage me . I hope they do the same for you! :)

I am here, at this moment,by devine design, on temporary assignment, to accomplish His sovereign purpose by His redemptive/sustaining grace, for His eternal glory!

God has every right to rearrange my life at any time, in anyway, in order to fulfill His plan for it's influence to His glory .

Be Careful What You Pray For?????

So many people say this, both Christian and Non-Christian, but what is behind this statement? Be careful what you pray for because....

......God might allow something to happen to you that you won't like.

......It might be to hard for you to bear.

.....You know, praying for patience brings trials...

.....You might get what you pray for.

One of the reasons I don't agree with or like this phrase is because it gives the wrong impression of Our Awesome God. It gives the impression that God doesn't ,or might not have our best interest in mind. God always knows just what we need and when we need it. Sometimes God's best for us isn't what we would choose. I thinks many of us have experienced and answered prayer that has not been answered in the way we expected. Yet none the less God answered the prayer in a way that He knew would benefit us the most spiritually and Bring Glory to Him. Sometimes we just don't know what is best for ourselves and God sees the BIG picture in His plan.

God is all powerful, all knowing ,holy, just, good, merciful, and sovereign overall things.God Promises in Romans 8:28-29 "All things work together for good to them that love God, who are the called according to His purposes." and our primary purpose is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.

In Jeremiah 29: 11 it says "I know the thoughts I think toward you says the Lord thoughts of peace and not of evil. to give you a future and a hope. Then you will go and call up on me and pray to me and I will Listen to you , and you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for me with all your heart.( God is talking to the captives (Israel) His people). The plans God has for us are good and will lead us to a better relationship with Him to glorify Him.

In Isaiah 55: 8-9 It says God's thoughts are not our thoughts and Gods ways are not our ways for as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways higher than our ways and his thoughts higher than our thoughts.

His ways are meant for our good so to say "be careful what you pray for Gives the impression that God does not have what is best for us in mind. This implies He is not a loving, merciful, sovereign God which He is.

God always answers our prayers. Sometimes the answer is a clear Yes, sometimes the answer is a clear no, and sometimes he uses a unique method ( which we would not choose)to accomplish his purposes in our lives, for His Glory.

Acacia Wood

I know I just posted the other day, But I went to a bridal shower this weekend and a sister in Christ gave this as the conclusion to her devotion and what a beautiful picture it was of God's grace and work in peoples lives!
So here it is ! Enjoy!

Let me give you an illustration from my life as a missionary child in West Africa. In November 1969 a British expedition passed through Niamey, Niger, on its way down the Niger River. One of our missionaries had heard that one of the members aboard was a born-again Christian, so when the group arrived in the capital city Niamey he contacted this man. His name was Dr. Hepper and he was from the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, England. They asked him to come to visit our mission station and to take all the missionary children in our little two room school on a nature walk or field trip to point out the various plants and trees found in Niger, which is on the edge of the Sahara Desert. As we were walking, he stopped, pointed out one of our trees and said, "This is an acacia tree. It was of this species that God told Moses to use in building of the Tabernacle. It is a very hard wood, yet very light and could easily be covered in gold and still be carried without too much difficulty." Acacia wood would have been plentiful and quite accessible where the Israelites were camping in the desert.” One of my teachers got a funny look on her face and said, "You know, just the other day I asked an African man what that type of tree was good for and he replied, 'NOTHING'"!" Isn't that just like God! To take something that in the eyes of man is worthless and use it to raise up unto Himself a Tabernacle in the wilderness - to take that wood, shape it, cover it with gold and make it a pillar in the Holy of Holies where he housed His Glory! And, what an illustration of what God wants to do our lives today. We are nothing. But God can take a worthless sinner and strip off the bark of our own self-righteousness, save us, clothe us with the righteousness of Christ Himself, and make our bodies a temple for the Holy Spirit of God Himself to dwell in and reflect His glory! (See Revelation 3:10) So, keep God as your first love, making all your plans based upon His word, apply yourself to diligently work out the plans you make together, trusting God's providence along the way...and persevere, knowing that it is God who is at work in you and He promises to complete what He has begun. I look forward to seeing what God is going to do in and through you and Ryan in the years to come. May God bless your house, may He fill you with His joy in all your diligent doings, and may He make you perseveringly fruitful unto His glory.

* I tried to get a picture of an acacia bowl because they are beautiful but I don't know how to attach it here sooo check out the picture on target.com in the kitchen section. Search : acacia bowl :)

Malachi 3:3 A Refiners Fire

Several years ago a friend emailed this to me and it was a great encouragement to me .
I thought I would put it up here and see what you all thought.

Some time ago a few ladies met to study the scriptures. While reading the 3rd chapter of Malachi they came upon a remarkable statement.

Malachi 3:3
“He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.”

One of the ladies decided to visit a silversmith, and report back to the ladies on what he said about the subject. She went accordingly, and with out telling the silversmith the reason for her visit she asked him to tell her about the process of refining silver.

After he had fully described it to her, she asked, “Sir, do you have to watch while the work of refining is going on?” “Oh yes ma’am,” replied the silversmith. “I must sit and watch the furnace constantly, for, if the necessary time for the refining is exceeded in the slightest degree the silver will be injured.”

The Lady at once saw the beauty and comfort of the statement, ‘”He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.” God sees it as necessary to put His children into the furnace – but, His eye is steadily intent on the work of purifying and His wisdom and love are both engaged in the best manner for us. Our trials do not come at random, and He will not let us be tempted beyond what we are able to endure.( 1 Corinthians 10:13).

Before she left, the lady asked one final question, “How do you know when the process is finished?” “Oh that’s simple,” replied the silversmith…….”When I can see my own image in the silver, the refining process is complete”

God promises in His word He will be with us wherever we go! (Joshua 1:9)

Hope this encouraged you too!!

I have a longer post coming on A meek and quiet spirit but I am not at peace with what I have right now so it'll have to wait [ God must have some change in mind that I need to make to the post :) ]
